If there’s a certain fragrance you just can’t live without, you’re not alone as a fragrance fan. Scent has been part of our history for centuries, but took off as a product in the 1920s. Coco Chanel sprayed her new perfume, Chanel No. 5, at a garden party and everyone was obsessed.
Even famous movie stars like Marilyn Monroe loved it, meaning every person who yearned for a little glamour wanted to smell its seductive scent. Fast-forward to now, and we can all enjoy a touch of sparkle, with enticing fragrances poured into an electric diffuser.
What is an electric diffuser? You might be wondering. Spoiler alert, an electric diffuser is a device that has a water tank and a container for fragrance or essential oil.
How do electric diffusers work? Simply pour in the water and the fragrance oil, then the device heats these up to create a scented mist that disperses through your home. A convenient way to create a calming, beautifully-scented space.
But if you’re asking, can I use a fragrance oil in an electric diffuser, we’re here to answer that question and so much more.

Are fragrance oils and essential oils the same?
On the surface, fragrance oils and essential oils sound like similar products. But actually, there’s a real difference between them. Of course, both are oils and can carry fragrance, but essential oils are completely natural products with natural scents.
In a nutshell, essential oils are obtained from plant extracts by distilling the natural oils through heat. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in the treatment of illnesses and wellbeing support.
Slightly different, fragrance oils are artificially created and probably imitate scents you already know, such as lavender or vanilla. That’s not to say they don’t contain natural ingredients - many do, such as chamomile essential oil. But it’s fair to say that not all of the ingredients in a fragrance oil are natural.
Can I use fragrance oil in an electric diffuser?
If, like us, you love a cool fragrance that reminds you of good times, then you’ll want to keep reading. The answer to can I use fragrance oil in an electric diffuser is yes, you can! Your electric diffuser can’t tell between fragrance and essential oil, so both are suitable and don’t cause any damage to your diffuser.
The one thing to keep in mind is that whatever fragrance oil or essential oil you use, check to see if it contains alcohol. This is a no-no when it comes to electric diffusers as it can cause issues.
It’s helpful to read the label of your fragrance oil and check there are no ingredients that you might react to or that could be alcohol or ethanol before you put them in your electric diffuser.
How much fragrance oil should I use in an electric diffuser?
This is really down to your personal tastes, as one person might like a stronger fragrance compared to another. But a good rule of thumb would be to typically use around 3-5 drops of essential oil or 5-7 drops of fragrance oil. Experiment with different drop amounts to find the right combination for you.
Top tip: fragrance oil should come with an IFRA certificate which tell you how many drops to add to an electric diffuser.
It’s good to know that you can swap between fragrance oil and essential oil in your diffuser to keep things interesting and experience different scents to suit your mood. Say, one day you’re getting ready to go out and it’s time for an uplifting, energetic fragrance like peppermint.
Then, the next day you might be in need of a calming scent to help you unwind, such as lavender or bergamot that help to soothe and relax. This is the great thing about fragrance and essential oils - there are so many options for every situation!
