Can Reed Diffusers Be Reused?

Jul 18, 2024 · reed diffusers

If you're a consumer in 2024, sustainability will likely be a crucial consideration when purchasing. A recent study discovered that 66% of global consumers are willing to pay more for products from brands committed to positive social and environmental impact. With that in mind, let's consider how to rejuvenate your old reed diffuser in 'Can Reed Diffusers Be Reused?'

How Long Do Reed Diffuser Sticks Last?

Reed sticks carry the fragrance oil from the bottle to the air. Reed diffuser sticks typically have a lifespan of two to four months, but this can be affected by various factors. These  include the reed type, the oils' viscosity, and environmental conditions.

At The Essence Vault, we use natural rattan reeds, known for being fast-absorbing and long-lasting. We are also committed to sustainability and ensuring our customers can enjoy our products without compromising their beliefs. That’s why all of our fragrance products are vegan and cruelty-free, using the highest-quality ingredients to minimise the impact on the environment.

Signs That Your Reed Sticks Need Replacing

Like any other home fragrance product, a noticeable shift in scent, when you flip your reeds (whether in strength or notes)is a sure sign that they’re  on their way out. Additionally, if the sticks become visibly clogged with dust or dirt, or you notice some of the reed diffuser oil thickening around them, his will impact the reed's ability to disperse your fragrance effectively.

Can Reed Diffusers be Reused

Rinse, reuse and recycle aren't just things we're taught in schools to check a box in the curriculum. It’s a key message we should adhere to in our everyday lives. Here are some fun, creative ways you can reuse your reed diffuser!

The Bog Standard Refill

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a classic  refill. Your reed diffuser bottle can be used again and again with new oils and new rattan reeds to continue dispersing luxury fragrances around your home.

Floral Arrangements

If you want to add character and originality to your home, your old reed diffuser bottle could be a mini vase. Clean your reed diffuser bottle thoroughly and grab some small stem flowers (or chop the stems off yourself).

Add water into the bottle and your flowers; you now have a gorgeous little vase! This is the perfect way to add vibrancy and colour to your home whilst reusing your old diffusers.

Create Glowing Light Features

This is possibly our favourite idea out of the three! Little string lights in glass bottles are the perfect way to reuse old glass bottles to create a cosy and warm atmosphere. We recommend grabbing some string lights and threading a couple of bulbs into 3-4 diffuser bottles and placing these on a shelf or counter to  create your glowing bulbs.

How Reed Diffuser Oil Quality Affects Fragrance and Diffuser Lifespan

The quality of oils used with a reed diffuser is critical to the quality of fragrance and its longevity. Fragrance oils that are carefully extracted from high-quality ingredients will carry strong and clean scents that maintain their strength over a significant period.

Oils that are of lesser  quality can result in an underwhelming scent that fades quickly and leaves you having to introduce frequent refills, which can also be pricey.

Do Reed Diffusers Need to Be Replaced?

Well, the answer is yes and no. You see, these diffusers come with three elements: reed sticks, fragrance bottles, and oils. Naturally, all good things must come to an end. Even your reed sticks will lose their ability to diffuse fragrances, whether this is down to saturation or dirt buildup, and your oils will eventually dissipate and lose fragrance over time.

But unless you're a bit of a clutz and end up breaking your reed diffuser bottle in an unfortunate accident, it should last a long time.

So, do they need to be replaced? Well, your oils and rattan reeds will, there's no question about it. Although cleaning out your reed diffuser bottle and throwing away your reeds can feel pretty disheartening, it signifies a new era of strong scent in your home. If you like your usual comforts, you can just purchase your  favourite scent!

Our Final Thoughts

Sustainability isn't just a growing trend, it's a lifestyle and shoppers like yourself across the globe aren’t opposed to splashing the extra cash for environmentally friendly products or thinking innovatively to reuse and recycle old ones.

Despite it being clear when your reed diffuser is close to the end of its life, it's important to realise there is so much more life in your diffuser ready to be unleashed! Feeling fancy? Turn that old vessel into a gorgeous mini-vase, or pop in fairy lights for the ultimate cosy vibes.
