If you want your home to smell divine, there’s nothing better than the beautiful scent of a diffuser in your living space. At the moment, the home diffuser market is growing by 5.5% year by year, which means home diffusers are in demand and here to stay.
We’re all a little more invested in natural products these days, which is why diffusers really hit the mark when it comes to delivering fresh fragrances. Recent studies have shown that air fresheners release chemical fumes into the air that can affect your lungs, making natural diffuser oils all the more desirable.
Electric diffusers are different. What is an electric diffuser exactly? It’s a device you can use at home that heats up water and essential oil to create a scent mist and then gently disperses it around your home.
If you’ve never used an electric diffuser before, you may have some questions, such as, can you use reed diffuser oil in an electric diffuser? Or how do electric diffusers work? Here, we take a look at what you can use with an electric diffuser to safely and naturally perfume your home.

What is reed diffuser oil?
Reed diffuser oil is a fragranced oil-based liquid you put into a reed diffuser to scent an area. A reed diffuser typically has several reeds or sticks that stand in a glass container jar. The reed diffuser oil is put into this container and the reeds absorb the oil, then release the aroma slowly into the air over a period of time.
There are lots of different types of reed diffuser oil. In fact, you can pretty much buy reed diffuser oil in any scent you want, there’s so much choice on the market.
Common reed diffuser oil types are:
- Floral: you can buy floral reed diffuser oils, such as rose or geranium. Great if you want a touch of summer wafting through your home.
- Herbal: a good option if you’re looking for calm senses from your fragrance. Sandalwood, aloe vera, or rosemary are popular choices.
- Berry: Perfect as a fruity pick-me-up. Strawberry, raspberry, or cherry are uplifting best sellers.
- Seasonal: super sought-after at this time of year. In the run-up to Christmas, clementine, cinnamon, or festive spice all raise the festive anticipation levels.
Can you use reed diffuser oil in an electric diffuser?
We don’t recommend putting reed diffuser oil into an electric diffuser! This is because reed diffuser oil is a mixture of oil, water, and alcohol, which could damage your electric diffuser.
Essential oils designed for electric diffusers are blended differently. They contain just water and essential oil, which suits your diffuser much better. Plus, the scent dispersal with an electric diffuser essential oil will happen at just the right rate if you select appropriate essential oils rather than a reed diffuser oil.
Which oils can you use in an electric diffuser?
Basically, as long as you select an essential oil that’s specifically suited to your electric diffuser, you can go as wild as you like when it comes to daring or sensual scent combinations.
You might not be aware but there’s a slight contrast between fragrance oils and essential oils. Fragrance oils are not always 100% natural, as only some of their ingredients will come from plants. Essential oils are completely natural and suit electric diffusers as they don’t contain any synthetic raw materials.
The great news is that you can use both fragrance oils and essential oils in an electric diffuser. Check before you use an oil that it doesn’t contain alcohol, like a reed diffuser oil.
