How to Use Essential Oils? (FAQs)

Jul 11, 2024 · electric diffusers · essential oils

Are you looking for high-quality essential oils? You're in luck! The Essence Vault has just launched it’s vegan, cruelty-free range of essential oils, perfect for creating a luxury scent experience in your home. Today's blog, 'How to Use Essential Oils,' will cover some FAQs about using essential oils safely and where you can get your hands on them!

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated oils that are mostly used in electric diffusers to add fragrance to your home and as massage oil to relax and offer aromatherapy benefits.

In a nutshell, essential oils are liquified plants! They are made through distillation or cold pressing, where the essence of plants, flowers, leaves, stems, or roots is extracted. These extracts are blended to create a unique fragrance in a bottle.

Essential oils are used for various purposes, including therapeutic and aromatherapy benefits. They can affect your mood, calm your mind, and be a natural remedy for minor ailments. For example, lavender is often used to relax the senses, while tea tree oil fragrances are often used to soothe the skin.

Essential oils are versatile; you can use them in massages, diffusers, or even add a couple of drops to your bath for the ultimate relaxation.

Are Essential Oils Safe for Dogs and Other Pets?

Making your home pet-friendly is one of the key considerations when bringing home a furry friend!

Official guidance is that essential oils are generally safe for pets to be around. However, some sensitive pets might turn their nose up at some essential oils.! This is because essential oils can vary in concentration, formation and quality. This means that contact between oils and your pets should be avoided. It is also wise to keep essential oils out of reach so they don't end up in the wrong paws!

This will vary from pet to pet, so make sure to do your own research before buying!

quote from connor martin founder of the essence vault image, for the blog post How to Use Essential Oils? (FAQs)

“The inspiration behind launching this collection of 5 blends came from a couple of places. Firstly, I’d used something similar from a brand before, but I didn't enjoy paying £30+ for a tiny bottle that wasn't as long-lasting as it should be.

Secondly, I LOVED the idea of matching essential oils with my daily routine. For example, I sometimes struggled to sleep and tried everything – eye masks, no screens before bed, different pillows – but the main fix was the calming scent of lavender and frankincense!

Our goal is to make these experiences more accessible and effective for everyone. The Focus oil is my favourite; I love the mix of rosemary and peppermint. I use about  5-7 drops at 10 am before my work meetings. It makes the office smell great and helps me avoid that third coffee of the day!”

How Many Drops of Essential Oil Should I Use?

One thing you need to know about essential oils is that they are potent! Trust us, they aren’t weak in the slightest. So, how many drops should you be using?

Electric Diffuser: Dilute 6 -10 drops to naturally scent your space daily.

Massage: Add 1-2 drops of oil to your chosen base oil for a relaxing massage.

Bath: Add 6-8 drops of your chosen oil to your bath for a relaxing soak.

Can I Use Essential Oils on My Skin?

It's tempting, we know. Opening up a bottle of essential oils and thinking damn, I wish I could just smell like this isn't out of the ordinary. A common misconception regarding products like essential oils is that because the ingredients usually come from plant extracts, they are safe to use on the skin.

However, applying essential oils directly to the skin can cause adverse reactions, including irritation and allergic reactions, particularly for those with more sensitive skin.

Even the most natural ingredients can irritate some people, so like many other products, it is essential to test a little on a small area of your skin and monitor how it responds.

Can Essential Oils Expire?

Yes, they absolutely can expire. While they don't expire as food does, essential oils can degrade and lose their effectiveness and scent after a while. Most essential oils have a shelf life of about 2 years. To keep your essential oils fresh, store them in a cool, dark place with tightly closed lids. If your oil smells off or different than usual, it's best to replace it.
