Can You Use Any Oil in an Electric Diffuser?

Dec 23, 2024 · electric diffusers · essential oils

With a history of health benefits and supporting wellbeing, oils derived from plants have played a major role in the way we look after ourselves. Even the Ancient Egyptians, over 5000 years ago, were extracting valuable essences from plants to use in lotions and potions.

Take a look at your moisturiser. Chances are there are some oil-related ingredients in the mix. Applying oil-based products to your skin has a soothing effect and it’s just the same when it comes to the impact of oil in an electric diffuser. What is an electric diffuser? It’s a device that combines water and oil to create a beautiful scent mist.

Some essential oils are known to have aromatherapeutic properties—that’s to say they promote better health and feelings of wellness. Natural oils can be used to look after you holistically, supporting your whole self to manage irritating symptoms or unhelpful emotions.

And the simplest way to access that support is using oils in electric diffusers to get you feeling perkier by the second. So if you’re wondering: can you use any oil in an electric diffuser, we take a look at the facts to help you decide what oils can you use in an electric diffuser for irresistible fragrances.

Can you use any oil in an electric diffuser?

If only you could! Sadly, you can’t use just any old oil in your electric diffuser as some oils contain ingredients that could harm or damage the device. Plus, some oils aren’t meant to be dispersed through the atmosphere as they could impact your air quality.

But the good news is that there are lots of oils you can use in your electric diffuser to help you feel chill on the inside and warm on the outside during the winter months. It’s helpful to read the label before you buy or use an oil product in your electric diffuser to make sure it’s designed to be used in this way and doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients. Make sure there’s no alcohol or ethanol in your oil as this also isn’t suitable for diffusing.

Hint: it might be tempting to use reed diffuser oils in your electric diffuser if you have some in your home. Try to avoid this—reed diffuser oil isn’t meant to be heated up as it’s designed to be absorbed into reeds.

Here are some specifically designed oils you can use in your electric diffuser:

Fragrance oils

Fragrance oils do what they say on the pack—they bring  gorgeous scents into your life. Fragrance oils are a combination of natural elements and synthetic raw materials that usually match a specific fragrance, like vanilla or sandalwood.

For that individual touch, you can blend fragrance oils together to create a personalised oil reflecting your lifestyle and tastes. Combine several oils or try different strengths to keep things interesting.

Essential oils

The clue is in the name with essential oils: they are derived from the essential and powerful elements found in plants. Put simply, essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from natural sources and are pretty much natural as a product.

Everyone probably has their favourite essential oil, but did you know that each essential oil has a different purpose? Due to their reported healing properties, essential oils can help with lots of different health concerns. For example, sweet orange helps to reduce stress, rose can improve your mood, and rosemary can give your concentration a boost.

How to care for your electric diffuser

To keep your electric diffuser in tip-top condition, try to give it a clean after every use. This will make sure it doesn’t get clogged with oil deposits or get any build-up of water scum. A really easy way to do this is to empty any remaining water or oil from the tank and use a clean cloth to wipe and then dry the device.

A good tip is to keep the lid on when storing your electric diffuser between each use. This is to prevent dust from settling which could stop the device from working effectively or impact the smell of your oils.

If you want to look after your electric diffuser properly, the best way is to give it a deep clean once a month. Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Unplug your diffuser and empty all water and oil.
  2. Fill the diffuser half way with clean water. Add 10 drops of white vinegar to clean the tank.
  3. Plug in the diffuser and run for 10 minutes to allow the water and vinegar to thoroughly clean the tank.
  4. Unplug and empty the vinegar and water solution. Use a clean soft cloth to dry the whole device.
  5. Store away with the lid on until the next use.

Although this sounds like a bit of a faff, it will keep your electric diffuser running for longer so you enjoy the fragrances you love year after year.
